Guest guest
IAR's March e-newsletter Dear AAPN Supporter The first IAR wildlife tour to visit the Agra bear sanctuary in February was a resounding success. Everyone on the tour had a wonderful time and returned with glowing accounts of their experiences. The next trip is in November and several bookings have already been taken, so book now to avoid disappointment! The tour company is generously donating 10% of the tour income to the free the bears campaign, so this is the perfect way to have a fabulous wildlife holiday and support IAR's campaign to free the bears in India. To find out more, visit the Naturetrek website at http://www.naturetrek.co.uk Also in February, our Indian partners Wildlife SOS were busy rescuing several young bear cubs from poachers and bringing the illegal wildlife traders to justice. These raids are only possible thanks to strong backing from the Indian government and the police. Our relationship with them has been vital to the success of our rescue and rehabilitation of bears in India. Read about the rescue here: http://www.iar.org.uk/news/2007/feb07.shtml With public endorsement from the government, we are able to expand the sanctuary in Agra and we now have enough land to take in hundreds more bears - in fact, all the bears that remain on the streets. An end to the dancing bear trade in India really is in sight! And it's not only bears that we have been rescuing in India in recent months. IAR founder John Hicks has been kept busy in Goa rescuing monkeys that have been captured from the wild and kept cruelly chained or caged as pets or to beg money from tourists. These poor creatures suffer terrible trauma from their lives in captivity, and it is entirely thanks to the loving care from John and his wife Jo that the monkeys they rescue are thriving and hopefully one day will be able to go back to the wild. Read more about it here: http://www.iar.org.uk/news/2007/feb07-3.shtml Finally, all of us at IAR rejoiced at the news that Scottish Natural Heritage has accepted the findings of new scientific research and has finally agreed to suspend its cull of hedgehogs on the islands of Uist in favour of a translocation trial. This is wonderful news for the hedgehogs! ... In fact, I have just learned from SNH that the first two relocated hedgehogs are on their way to the mainland where they will be rehabilitated prior to release by Andy and Gay of Uist Hedgehog Rescue (UHR) of which IAR is a founding member. Read about the suspension of the cull here: http://www.iar.org.uk/news/2007/feb07-4.shtml I am always happy and proud to give you news of the animals that we have rescued. But countless animals around the world still suffer in silence. We desperately need more resources if we are to reach out to them. We can do none of this work without you: thank you for your support, and if you are able to help us to help the animals once again today, it will mean we can come to the aid of more animals more quickly. Please donate here: http://www.iar.org.uk/donate Thank you. Yours sincerely, Alan Knight OBE, Chief Executive www.iar.org.uk
