Guest guest
Link: http://www.ibnlive.com/news/blore-shelves-dogs-sterilisation/37655-3.html Bangalore: The Animal Rights Fund's dog compound on the outskirts of Bangalore used to house some 200 strays brought for sterilisation any given day. But as of today, barely 50 dogs remain, and none of them are at the compound as part of the State's animal birth control programme. Sterilisation programmes for dogs have come to a standstill over the last month across the city. " Since March 1, no animal birth control programme has been on in the city. It has been a perennial problem with the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike. The funds are never released on time, " says founder trustee, Animal Rights Fund, Dilip Bafna. But Bangalore Mahanagara Palike officials say the programme is under review after the death of two children bitten by strays. " The programme that's is on through the NGOs will continue for other areas merged in the BMP, " says Special Commissioner, Bangalore Mahanagara Palikem, Gaurav Gupta. And animal rights activists say it could already be late. " Immediate effect I see is to - spread of rabies because number of dogs not vaccinated have been relocated, " says Bafna. Amidst this, officials also say convener of the animal health foundation Rahul Sehgal is likely to inaugurate a mass sterilization programme in the city by the end of this week. And if the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike carries through with its allotment of over Rs 4 crore this financial year, things should look up.
