One attacked by stray rhino

From a Correspondent

JORHAT, July 30: One Rajib Bora (22), a farmer of Malowkhat in north

west Jorhat was injured when a stray rhinoceros from the Kaziranga

National Park attacked him, today. Rajib Bora, with two broken teeth,

has been admitted to the civil hospital here.

According to forest department source three rhinos have strayed from

the Kaziranga National Park. A female and a calf have taken shelter on

a sand bank in Majuli while the another grown rhino is roaming among

the bamboo clumps in north west Jorhat and may have been the one to

have attacked Rajib Bora.

Forest department officials are apprehensive that these stray rhinos

may fall easy prey to poachers and have sought the help of the police

to protect this endangered species.

Meanwhile, 10 deer have died in the Kaziranga National Park following

flood waters inundating a large part of the park. Six deer have been

killed by speeding vehicles on NH 37 which runs through the park and

four more have been drowned. Six more animals which were being swept

by flood waters are being treated at the animal rescue centre in the Park.
