Dear Mark,we met at the beautiful Sandhamn site

at the Animal Ethics Smposium in Sweden, where I

told you about my starting PhD project

Non-Killing Cattle Husbandry.

Below you find a short description of the

idea/background of the work I am up to. It would

be great if you could hand it forward to people

who might know farms where they already (at least

to some extend) practice Non-Killing Cattle

Husbandry .

All the best and thanks a lot.

Patrick

Non-Killing Cattle Husbandry

About 3-8 % of the german population are

Vegetarians. Most of them are not aware of the

fact, that consuming milk and milk products (as

lacto-vegetarians) contributes to the birth of

bull calves for fattening and that dairy cows

hardly reach their possible biological age.

Regarding this two issues, there are only little

differences between organic and conventional

animal husbandry.

To avoid this consequences of milk consumption,

there is the possibility to live on a vegan diet.

But what choices do those consumers and farmers

have, who envision an ecological agriculture with

animal husbandry and at the same time do not want

to kill the animals? A historical answer to this

approach we can find in Mahatma Gandhi's

fostering of the indian Cow Protection movement.

As a PhD student from Germany I am looking for

examples of our days, systems that work and

farmers I could interview about their

biographical, ethical and practical approach to

Non-Killing Animal Husbandry- The only people I

know so far are the farms of the International

Society of Krishna Consciousness.

I would be very glad, if anyone could give further hints or suggestions.
