Guest guest
Monday November 27, 2006 The Star Cry for help still falling on deaf ears THE LETTER, " Present laws inadequate in protecting animals " (The Star, Nov 17) is a cry for help very often heard but forever falling on deaf ears. Ordinary Citizen of Malacca was very noble in his intention to help the poor dogs and is not alone in this matter. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Malacca, has responded to several such calls, even from tourists. Such calls seem to be on the increase this year. We did our best for every case but only the Veterinary Service Department can act on the offenders. We regret that we were not able to save these dogs from an agonising death. We have also taken part in signature campaigns with SPCA Selangor calling for the outdated law to be amended but again to no avail. We hope to have more Malaysians who are truly caring towards animals like Ordinary Citizen because animal cruelty is solely a human problem. We need legislation and education to combat cruelty to animals and to control the stray population. And we need people like you because together we will one day make the difference. ANGELINE TAN Vice-Chairman, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Malacca.
