NDTV Correspondent

Sunday, November 26, 2006 (Chiang Mai):

The long-awaited arrival of four cute and cuddly koala bears from

Australia took place in the tourist city of Chiang Mai amid much

fanfare.

The crowds were entertained by men in giant koala suits who paraded

in a convertible car, waving Australian and Thai flags.

The parade attracted hundreds of children and locals who flocked to

the scene to welcome the furry animals to Chiang Mai Zoo, 700 km

north of Bangkok.

The animals were a gift from Australia in a bid to strengthen ties

between the two countries.

For the time being, visitors will be kept at bay to ensure that the

animals are not overwhelmed by all the attention.

However, fans will be permitted to view the creatures after two

weeks, but will be warned to stay silent and to keep their distance.
