Gharial found dead

Cooch Behar, Nov. 26: The body of a gharial (a fish-eating member of

the crocodile family) was found at the rescue centre at Rasikbeel, 40

km from here, today.

The forest employees who discovered it informed the beat officer of

Rasikbeel, Narayan Joddar. " The gharial was three years old. With its

death, the total number of the reptiles at the centre has come down to

eight, " said Joddar.

Veterinary surgeon from Tufanganj Sukhdev Sarkar was called in for the

post-mortem. Forest minister Ananta Roy said an inquiry will be

conducted to find out the cause of death.
