When state Wildlife and National Parks Department officers raided the tannery, they found 748 clouded monitor lizards, 231 oriental rat snakes, four king cobras and 800 grammes of pangolin bones and scales. Tannery owner Eyu Joo Poh and his assistant, Chua Swee Chai, were charged in the magistrate's court yesterday. Eyu, 37, from Jenjarum, Selangor, was charged with hiding information on the illegal activities at his tannery in Jalan Gambang here about 4.30pm on March 8. Eyu's tannery was only licensed to process python skin. Chua, 38, from Meru, Klang, faced three charges of keeping the lizards and two types of snakes protected under the Protection of Wildlife Act 1972. He was also charged with possessing the remnants of the pangolin, also a protected animal. Chua could be fined up to RM2,000 or jailed not more than two years or both for possessing the lizards. For owning the snakes and pangolin parts, he could be fined a maximum of RM3,000 or jailed two years or both for each offence. For concealing the illegal activities, Eyu could be given half the punishment meted out to Chua.
