Jumbos keep Jamuguri villagers on tenterhooks

From Our Correspondent

ITAKHOLA, Nov 27 – Great sensation prevailed in the whole of North

Jamuguri area of Sonitpur district as a herd of wild elephants

coming from the 6th annexation of Kaziranga National Park in search

of fodder on the night of November 24 destroyed eight houses and

trampled standing paddy crop of the rural people, thus creating

panic and anxiety alike. Obviously, the ruralites have been

compelled to spend sleepless nights.

According to a reliable source, a herd of 20 wild elephants entered

Nabil village of North Jamuguri and subsequently depredated dwelling

houses and standing crops. The same herd reportedly damaged vast

areas of agricultural crop at Tupia the same night.

During the last one week, the herd has continuously created havoc

and spread a fear psychosis in the Balisuri, Nag Bazar, Morisuti,

Bhoroli Chapori, Khaka Basti areas of North Jamuguri.

Local MLA of Sootea Padma Hazarika has in the meantime assured all

possible help to the pachyderm-struck villagers of Nabil and Tupia.

He rushed to the side of the depredated villagers and took stock of

their losses.

Money stolen: Unidentified miscreants stole money from a retired

school teacher on November 24, which created a sensation in the

greater North Jamuguri area of Sonitpur district.

Homeswar Nath, who is a retired teacher of Delorai HS School of

Itakhola and an inhabitant of Joysidhi area, withdrew Rs 80,000 from

his SBI account at the Rangachukua branch on that fateful day. After

keeping the cash in the dikky of his motor cycle, he went to a

nearby shop to purchase necessary articles. On returning, he found

that miscreants had decamped with the money by opening the dikky.

A case was subsequently registered at the Biswanath police station

regarding the incident, though none was arrested.
