Hi Shirley,

The Thai government has issued a statement this week that 56 kinds of wild

animal species can be bred for commercial use within this year. The project

is one of Dr Schwann Tunhikorn, who retired in the last quarter of 2006 from

the Department of National parks and is now an advisor to the minister of

Natural Resources and Environment, he says that the commercial breeding is

common in all countries and Thailand should follow. The pig-tailed macaque

and long tail macaques are two of the species brought up for commercial

breeding and export. Unless we campaign strongly against this, Thailand will

be on next year's list as well.

The US army does tests on macaques in Thailand in a closed facility in

Chonburi; we cannot get any info on this within Thailand unfortunately. We

can only imagine what horror goes on in there.

AAPN List

Asian primate traffickers

Here is a list of the top Asian exporters of monkeys to the United

States for the year 2006. The information was provided to IPPL by the

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Of course, many other countries

import monkeys and some slip through the record-keeping. Most of the

monkeys are crab-eating macaques. This species may be doomed if

wholesale trade predation is not controlled. Some U.S. and European

users are exporting their research to foreign countries with relaxed

or no animal protection laws or enforcement. Such as two U.S. labs

which are setting up branches in Nepal. Unfortunately many of these

monkeys will already have been killed in bio-warfare or infectious

disease experiments. Total primate imports to the United States in

2006 was 26,338.

IPPL would be pleased to receive any information regarding any of

these companies. Does anyone have similar statistics for other countries?
