Dear All,

Have just returned from Imphal after visiting the start of bird culling due

to the outbreak of H5N1.

No idea as of now whether the strains of H5N1 have been avoided contact

although I was fortunate enough to be wearing specialized Nano masks which

had been arranged by Ms. Anuradha Sawhn culled in many localities of Imphal

city on 27th July` 2007. Chief Functionary of PETA-India.

Have drafted some of the objectionable ways in which the birds were being

culled by the officials there.

If you feel that what you read below are violations of avian culling norms

please do call up the numbers below.

You can also help the authorities by providing your valuable inputs in this

regards.

The control room number of the Veterinary and Animal Husbandry department,

Government of Manipur is: 0385 2450224

Some important Manipur Press and Media numbers:

The Telegraph, Khelen Thokchom, Principal Correspondent, 94360 39708, 0385

2446579

The Statesman, Rupachandra Yumnam, Principal Correspondent, 98620 27905,

0385-2450453

Imphal Free Press, Pradip Phanjoubam, Editor, 0385-2441705

( For more press numbers do revert ).

How they were culled:

1. Adult chicken were culled on the spot in many localities of Imphal by the

culling people in specialized suits blue rain coat type, wearing masks,

goggles, boots, gloves etc.

They adopted the wringing of the neck technique and after wringing the neck

the birds were dumped into gunny sacks. Residents were all asked to declare

their stock and they were seen carrying hens, ducks chicks ducklings to the

culling people and were getting them culled in their presence. Also there

was an official to take note of the number of birds being culled for the

compensations etc.

2. I also could see many adult hen and ducks being clubbed on the head one

by one by the culling agents and then dumped into gunny sacks.

3. Ducklings ( seemed couple of days old ) were being counted for one by one

and thrown into a plastic bag and the bag was sealed.

4. I was told that all the birds that were culled and collected from

different localities would finally be dumped as per the desired

recommendations.
