After the death of two young children who were bitten by dogs, there

has been a constant debate over what to do with street dogs in Karnataka.

The images of indiscriminate mass killing of dogs in towns around the

state that followed were horrifying, and people are now seeking other

methods of getting the dogs off the street.

One such initiative is an adoption camp held by a Bangalore NGO, which

aims to find the dogs a safe and loving home.

" It is not good that you kill street dogs. People will be there to

take care of branded dogs. But these dogs do not have anyone to look

after them, " said Amritha, a local.

" I request all Bangaloreans to love homeless dogs. Please I request

them to love breed dogs but give a life to normal dogs also, " said

Uday Simha, Coordinator, Krupa.

Animal welfare NGOs run regular adoption camps, and the puppies have

been bathed, vaccinated and are all ready for a good home, which is

clearly a far more humane way of getting them off the streets.

" When we look and love a dog, we are also not troubled by them. But if

we let them loose on the street, they might run around, get hit by

people and then they will bite. Otherwise they won't bite, " said

Kamalamma, said a local.

" I like puppies and they are giving puppies away here. That is why we

came here, " said Devraj, another local.

And as the pups start their journey to what is hopefully a better life

ahead, it needs to be remembered that a dog is a companion for the

whole of its life and not just until it outgrows its undeniable puppy

cuteness.
