Guest guest
Guwahati: 10/07/2007 A Leopard cat which has strayed from a nearby forest was spotted on a tall eucalyptus tree adjacent to the city`s most high profile Dispur Police Station which is on the entrance of the State Legislative Assembly of Assam. Being a high security VIP zone the Police immediately called the Forest people. A team of Forest personnels headed by the assam State Zoo, Divisional Forest Officer, Mr. Narayan Mahanta reached the spot and are at the moment camping there. The Forest guys say that there is no need to panic and since the animal is positioned very high up and was sleeping, so they decided it best to leave it undisturbed and also not take risk in tranquilizing the cat. The Police had a tough time in dispersing the curious crowd that had gathered in huge numbers as news of the leopard cat spread like wildfire in the city. Most of those who came expected the animal to be a leopard as is the case in the city because of the rising number of leopard-human conflicts here. The Forest people will monitor the animal and say that as night approaches the animal may climb down and finds its own way to the nearby forest. But till then the authorities have a hard task ahead of not only observing the animal but also to control the mob which can go out of control. Incidents of leopards, civet cats and leopard cats frequenting city areas for food and getting trapped is becoming more common in the city of Guwahati and in many parts of Assam. Encroachment is massive and is increasing at at alarming rate here.
