The incidents of attacks by the wild elephants in these villages showed that they came to the villages from the bordering Bhutan and Arunachal in search of food. Now it is a common sight in the border villages of the district that the villagers have to pass sleepless nights in order to save their paddy fields, houses and even human lives from the wrath of wild elephants who throng the villages under the cover of darkness and start attacking the villages. Such an incident of wild elephant attack took place in the morning on July 6 last at Tarajuli village under Rowta PS in which one Pashupati Upadhyaya(70) became the victim. According to the reports from the village, a group of six wild elephants attacked and trampled him to death. The herd also destroyed the house of the deceased. The herd then attacked one Loknath Sapkota(53) of the same village when he was ploughing his paddy field. Sapkota was brought to Rowta state dispensary for treatment and his condition is stated to be critical till the filing of this report. Not only this, the herd of wild pachyderms also destroyed the stationary shop of one Kathek Chetry in the same village and destroyed the house of one George Bahadur Chetry. Meanwhile, the Rowta police led by Manik Ch. Das, officer-in-charge visited the village and took stock of the situation and sent the body of Upadhyaya to Mangaldoi for post-mortem. Talking to this correspondent, some of the villagers alleged that the forest department of the district was indifferent to the increasing menace of wild elephants in the villages which has caused tremendous loss to the villagers in this rainy season. Meanwhile, reports of menace of wild elephants in Amjuli, Lisingaon, Borigaon, Ambagaon, Khaurang, Phulbari and neighboring rural areas bordering Bhutan were being received. Demanded: The Mazbat block committee of Bodoland Peoples Progressive Front (BPPF-H) demanded the immediate arrest of GS Paneswar, block development officer of Mazbat Development Block and some others in connection with the assault on one Pinku Borah, secretary of the political organization. Borah was assaulted in broad daylight on July 4 in the heart of Mazbat town by some miscreants. The Mazbat block committee of the party also lodged an FIR against the accused persons at Mazbat PS and demanded the immediate arrest of GS Paneswar, Dipak Mour, secretary of Sachetan Yuva Mancha, Munindra Kalita, Gautam Hazarika, Manoj Roy Choudhury, Nirmal Kachari, Rakheb Daimari, Nirmal Daimari and Srikanta Daimari, believed to be linked with the attack of Pinku Borah failing which the BPPF(H) threatened to launch a massive agitation to this effect.
