4 zebras arrive at Marghazar Zoo

*By Imran Naeem Ahmad*

ISLAMABAD: Two long awaited pairs of zebras have finally arrived at the

Marghazar Zoo, officials told Daily Times on Saturday.

" We have been waiting for their arrival for quite some time because those

received e earlier have been sent back as they are not of an appropriate

height, " Zoo and Wildlife Director Raja Muhammad Javed said. The zebras are

a welcome addition to the facility that is still without some main animals

like lions, tigers and giraffes.

Javed said four Vervet monkeys had also been procured along with four

African grey parrots and as many white cockatoos. " We also have plans to get

giraffes and some other animals but their arrival will depend on when their

enclosures are ready, " he said.

The zoo, located at the foot of the Margalla Hills, is to be built anew with

the Capital Development Authority (CDA) having hired the services of new

consultants.

Javed said the construction work would take about three years. " The plan is

to develop the zoo along the lines laid down by the World Association of

Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), " he said.

The CDA has appointed Messrs Unicon of Lahore who will be working in tandem

with South African firm Van Riet & Louw, a prominent name in landscaping and

zoo planning.

Javed claimed that once the project was completed, it would become the best

zoo in the country. Pakistan has a total of 14 zoos, of which 10 are

government-run and four are private, in addition to about 22 animal breeding

centres. The Marghazar Zoo had to be shut down for almost a week in February

after several peacocks died of bird flu. The virus first surfaced in

Pakistan's poultry last year when as many as 40,000 birds had to be culled.
