Guest guest Posted April 18, 2007 Report Share Posted April 18, 2007 Link: http://www.assamtribune.com/scripts/details.asp?id=apr1807\City5 Love for animals emphasised GUWAHATI, April 17 – It is high time for every human being to realise that all the flora and fauna contribute towards preserving the ecological balance and their wanton destruction should be avoided, said, R C Jain, Deputy Commissioner Kamrup (Rural) district, while addressing students, teachers and members of the public at a meeting at Ramdia Higher Secondary School on April 12. The meeting was organised by Assam Go-Seva Samiti, a Gandhian social organisation based in Guwahati, with the help of the authority of Ramdia Higher Secondary School and Kamrup District Veterinary Department, to promote love for animals among the people and to enlighten them about proper upkeep of animals. Jain also stressed that the noble feeling of love for animals should be inculcated in the minds of the students from their chilhood. Nishinath Changkakoti, president, Asom Go-Seva Samiti, in his speech, lamented that while some people of different religions and countries have reached the peak of civilisation, many others have descended to the nadir of inhumanity by their highly barbaric acts and appealed to all present to banish violent feelings from their minds and to enable every living being to exist as per God's plan. Dr C Rajkonwar, former professor and Dean of veterinary science, Assam Agricultural University, explained to the audience modern scientific methods of upkeep of animals. Dr Kushal Sarma and Dr Kamala Kanta Saharia, associate professors of College of Veterinary Science, Khanapara, Guwahati, spoke in detail about the role of animals in maintaining ecological balance and about usefulness of animals in improving rural economy. Lakhmi Kanta Medhi, former professor, B Borooah College also addressed the gathering and appealed to them to patronise the Pashu Kalyan magazine published on quarterly basis by Asom Go-Seva Samiti jointly with four other organizations, to primarily propagate the message of love for animals. Along with the meeting, a free animal treatment camp was also held in the school field where altogether 1144 cattle and ten dogs were provided free medical check-up and free medicines by veterinary doctors of Asom Go-Seva Samity and Niranjan Das, Naba Kanta Sarma, Jogen Das and Gopal Baishya – all veterinary assistant surgeons of Kamrup District Veterinary Department. As a part of the function, a competition about proper maintenance of calves was also conducted by a team of veterinary doctors consisting of Dr Prafulla Chandra Das, Dr Kanak Chandra Sarma and Dr Kamala Kanta Saharia.
