Love for animals emphasised

GUWAHATI, April 17 – It is high time for every human being to realise

that all the flora and fauna contribute towards preserving the

ecological balance and their wanton destruction should be avoided,

said, R C Jain, Deputy Commissioner Kamrup (Rural) district, while

addressing students, teachers and members of the public at a meeting

at Ramdia Higher Secondary School on April 12.

The meeting was organised by Assam Go-Seva Samiti, a Gandhian social

organisation based in Guwahati, with the help of the authority of

Ramdia Higher Secondary School and Kamrup District Veterinary

Department, to promote love for animals among the people and to

enlighten them about proper upkeep of animals. Jain also stressed that

the noble feeling of love for animals should be inculcated in the

minds of the students from their chilhood.

Nishinath Changkakoti, president, Asom Go-Seva Samiti, in his speech,

lamented that while some people of different religions and countries

have reached the peak of civilisation, many others have descended to

the nadir of inhumanity by their highly barbaric acts and appealed to

all present to banish violent feelings from their minds and to enable

every living being to exist as per God's plan.

Dr C Rajkonwar, former professor and Dean of veterinary science, Assam

Agricultural University, explained to the audience modern scientific

methods of upkeep of animals. Dr Kushal Sarma and Dr Kamala Kanta

Saharia, associate professors of College of Veterinary Science,

Khanapara, Guwahati, spoke in detail about the role of animals in

maintaining ecological balance and about usefulness of animals in

improving rural economy.

Lakhmi Kanta Medhi, former professor, B Borooah College also addressed

the gathering and appealed to them to patronise the Pashu Kalyan

magazine published on quarterly basis by Asom Go-Seva Samiti jointly

with four other organizations, to primarily propagate the message of

love for animals.

Along with the meeting, a free animal treatment camp was also held in

the school field where altogether 1144 cattle and ten dogs were

provided free medical check-up and free medicines by veterinary

doctors of Asom Go-Seva Samity and Niranjan Das, Naba Kanta Sarma,

Jogen Das and Gopal Baishya – all veterinary assistant surgeons of

Kamrup District Veterinary Department.

As a part of the function, a competition about proper maintenance of

calves was also conducted by a team of veterinary doctors consisting

of Dr Prafulla Chandra Das, Dr Kanak Chandra Sarma and Dr Kamala Kanta

Saharia. Nine villagers owning calves adjudged to be well maintained

were awarded cash incentives. This was stated in a press release.
