Domestic animals vaccinated

GUWAHATI, April 17 – Two massive camps were recently organised for

vaccination of khuti cattle and buffaloes being reared in the fringe

areas of Nameri National Park in Sonitpur district, a release said.

The first camp was organised in the Rangajan area on the northern bank

of Jiabhoreli river, where about 1200 cattle and buffaloes were

vaccinated against Hemorrhagic Septicaemia and Black Quarter, two

dreaded infectious diseases of domestic and wild animals.

The second camp was organised in the Bor-Dikorai area on the bank of

the river Bor-Dikorai, in which about 2000 khuti cattle and buffaloes

were vaccinated against HS and BQ.

The camp held under the leadership of Dr KK Sarma, general secretary

of the Blue Cross Society, Assam was attended by Dr Jeherul Islam, Dr

Devojit Deka, Dr Naba Thakuria besides 10 final year students from the

College of Veterinary Science, AAU, Khanapara. The Nameri National

Park authority under the supervision of SP Basistha, DFO, A Baig,

Range Officer and the staff members extended full support in

organising the camps.

The livestock reared in wildlife protected areas in the khuti system

is a potential threat to the valuable wild animals as they can easily

spread serious epidemics to the already endangered wild fauna.

Therefore, protection of these animals by creating immune belt can

give indirect protection to the wild animals, the release added.
