Guest guest
Guwahati: Friday, 10th August` 2007 Two adult elephants were mowed down by a speeding train adjacent to the Deepor Beel ( Ramsar Site Wetland ) in Guwahati, Assam around 12am in the night. It may be noted that speeding trains have in the past killed dozens of elephants in the area. The site where the accident took place is a unique biodiversity hot spot which has been of late been turned into a killing field of elephants. Elephant herds come down from the adjoining Rani-Garbhanga reserve forests to the wetland and stay there for days bathing and feeding on the aquatic plants which is a favorite of the elephants. The railway line cuts the wetland on many places and therefore speeding trains have been responsible for the repeated tragedies. earlier though there was a circular issues by the Forest department restricting the speed of the trains, btu NO TRAIN IS SEEN TO FOLLOW THE RESTRICTIONS. Guest guest
Guwahati, Friday, August 10th` 2007 Time: 11:32am (IST) Just came back from the site. The herd of the Elephant is still in the wetland about a two kilometers from the site of the accident. The elephants are an adult female and a young calf. The adult female was dragged by the train more than 100 meters with its body parts strewn all over the track. The young calf was also dragged to about 100kms. Mr. Surajit Dutta, Divisional Forest Officer, Wildlife Guwahati, said that the driver of the train has been arrested by the forest authorities for negligent driving and not maintaining the speed restrictions. In may be noted that last year three elephants were mowed down a little ahead of the present site on the same track. Last month a young elephant was injured by a speeding train in the same area as well. Senior Forest and Railway officials are at the site. The blame game has already begun between the Forest and the Railway departments over this incident.
