Activists of People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) held up placards reading `Stop Big Brother Circus Cruelty-Vote for Shilpa' at the Covent Garden. Thirty-one-year-old Shilpa, a staunch supporter of the PETA's campaign against bullying and cruelty to animals, is allegedly the target of racist attacks by fellow contestants of reality TV show Celebrity Big Brother, of which she is a participant. " When Shilpa Shetty joined PETA to speak up against cruelty to animals in circuses, she had no idea she would eventually be living in the midst of one, " PETA Europe supporter Lucy Groom told PTI. " We urge viewers to stop the Big Brother circus cruelty by voting for Shilpa, our friend and a defender of animals, " she said. Shilpa posed for one of PETA's most high-profile ad campaigns in India, an anti-circus advertisement in which she crouched behind the bars of a cage, dressed in a form-fitting tiger-striped body suit, with the tagline `Beaten, Lonely and Abused - Boycott the Circus'. Guest guest
Hi, I guess that the British will like this one! Animal activists protesting to save an Indian superstar. I guess if you cannot save the tiger any more you might as well try to save a Bollywood legend, although I feel they are not that endangered! This sounds a bit weird, since some of the alleged bullying is supposed to have been about the way she cooked a chicken! Never seen the programme myself - it sounds exceptionally boring and unpleasant - but despite her attitude to chickens the Bollywood lady sounds to have been rather more civilised than the rest of the cast. Dunno how the thing managed to hit the headlines at all, but once the media circus got going all sorts of people were using it to get a bit of publicity for themselves - so good luck to the animal activists! Talking of chickens, I just got an email saying some friends in the movement were looking for homes for several thousand hens rescued from slaughter - quite a task, though less problematic in some ways than the 137 very noisy cockerels abandoned by the roadside earlier this month. Vanessa UK PS Don't believe all you read about the British being a nation of animal lovers - they slaughter and eat them by the million same as everyone else!
