Caring for animals

Dear Editor,

EDUCATION or the lack of it is responsible for shaping us.- The Malay

Mail. 18 Jan 2007

One of the best ways to prevent animal cruelty is to teach children to

be kind to animals.

Children who are taught compassion early in life will contribute to a

caring society while exhibiting high standards of moral character.

According to a study by the American Humane Association; people who

deliberately abuse animals are five times more likely to commit

violent crimes against other people, four times more likely to commit

property crimes, and three times more likely to have a record of drug

abuse.

This is one the reasons why we are working towards introducing humane

education in schools. We have made our first proposals through our

petition to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi at:

www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/947146655

Even if you're not a teacher, there are many things you can do to help

teach children to be kind to animals.

Children learn much of what they know by watching those around them,

so one of the best ways to teach children is by showing them that you

care about animals. Encourage children to speak out when they see

animals being mistreated.

The lessons they learn will last a lifetime.
