Guest guest
www.assamtribune.com Letter to the Editor: Animal sacrifice in Pujas Sir, – Though `the Animal Rights Protection' activists have long been fighting to prevent animal sacrifice at various temples by way of propitiating their Gods and Goddesses, the elite section of the people who are supposed to have read various religious scriptures including Vedas and Sastras, and have a vast knowledge of religious ethics and beliefs, are still continuing the bloody mess by offering animal sacrifices, like he-goats, ducks, pigeons, – even buffaloes etc during every yearly Durga or Kali Pujas. Wobbly politicians, who aspire for more power and money, generally prefer to offer costly animals like buffaloes for sacrificing at the altar of Gods and Goddesses. These people never try to understand that animals are also the creation of God (and Goddesses as well). If the elder brother of a family tries to propitiate God/Goddesses for the well- being of their family by slaughtering the youngest brother (who cannot resist killing) at the altar of God, will God be pleased or satisfied? Even elite people like politicians, ignore the fact that all animals including human beings are the creation of the Almighty and each of them has the right to survive in this world as the men do, till their natural death. Unfortunately enough our government who is jittery about any move to prohibit animal sacrifice before God in the name of religion, has remained a mute spectator without any action against this practice. It is indeed a shame to have seen our politicians indulging in such savagery simply to get blessings from the Goddess for their personal gain. Such gory sights are very common in the world famous Kamakhya temple also, where hundreds and thousands of he-goats, pigeons, ducks and buffaloes are slaughtered daily during Durga Puja. As a matter of fact, Durga Puja is celebrated all over India, but animal sacrifice is limited only to Bengal and Asom. According to mythology, animal sacrifice, including human sacrifice was originally in vogue among the non-Aryans. So, this practice must have come from non-Aryan culture and belief. – Yours etc., JIBON SAIKIA, Chenikuthi, Guwahati.
