'Mad' dog attacks people, creates panic in city locality

* By A City Correspondent

GUWAHATI, July 11 – It was not a bomb scare this time at the

Panbazar-Lakhtokia area, but a four footed danger that inflicted severe

injuries on unsuspecting citizens. The danger, described as a black dog with

a lean body since yesterday has attacked many people causing panic in the

nearby areas.

The latest victim has been former MLA Ajay Dutta who was attacked from

behind by the dog near Don Bosco School on Wednesday. Dutta said that within

one hour today, the dog had gnawed around 15 persons. " When I went to MMC

hospital for treatment, I was told that I was the eighth case, " said Dutta.

Describing the incident, Dutta said that it was the most shocking experience

in his life and expressed his worries that more people might be harmed if a

warning was not issued.

Dutta said that the authorities should take immediate action as the dog,

which showed all symptoms of madness might cause serious harm to the

children.

" The people whom I met had serious injuries from the bite, " said Dutta,

adding that the dog attacked from behind without any provocation aiming at

the thigh.

Meanwhile, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has already taken steps

to catch the culprit. Commissioner of the civic body Rajesh Prasad informed

that the veterinary staff of the municipal body along with other officials

has been sent to the spot. Prasad also said that the DFO, wild life has been

requested to send a team to tranquilize the dog. " We have taken all the

necessary steps in this regard, " said Prasad.

A staff of the civic body, Dr Makhan Chandra Barman informed that the task

of locating the dog was getting difficult because of the crowd but the

search was on. " We have to determine whether the dog is actually mad or

not. We are trying our best to detect the dog, " said Dr Barman.
