The killings of the one-horned rhinos were blamed on poachers and lack of guards at the park. The government has taken steps to deploy atleast two sections of armed homeguards and all the enforcement machinery, said MC Malakar, PCCF Wildlife Assam. The police have been alerted and asked to take necessary steps. The government has asked superintendents of police in surrounding districts to form an anti-poaching unit. But park officials point out these steps can only be a stop gap arrangement. The state still needs to set up the National Wildlife Crime Control Bureau recommended by the Centre. Unless the government takes some comprehensive steps, soon tigers could be the next in the line of the poachers' fire at Kaziranga.
