As part of the preparations, the zoo has put up signposts at various points to direct visitors to the animals' enclosures. Narayan Mahanta, divisional forest officer (DFO) of the zoo, said signposts have been put up to enable the visitors to locate the animals they want to see most. " For those not able to understand English, photographs have been put up to enable them to identify the animals, " he said. The zoo is expecting huge crowds on New Year's day. Last year, the zoo had earned Rs 1.9 lakh and hopes to exceed the amount this year. A massive cleaning drive has been undertaken to keep the zoo litter- free. However, repair of roads at the zoo will have to be postponed because of the huge rush. Mahanta said the zoo is also facing problems with the people bringing in polythene bags despite repeated requests not to do so. " We are appealing to the people not to bring polythene bags, as they are harmful to the animals which chomp on them, " he added. The zoo will be kept open on all Fridays during January. Scouts and guides will be there to maintain discipline and medical teams will take care of medical problems.
