meat nutrition clarification

I should have worded my earlier post better.

just to clarify-

although bacteria make ALL b12, animals eat bacteria and then have it in their

flesh and milk. So you have to confirm with the manufacturer whether their

fortified product or supplement is appropriate for vegans or not, ie whether it

comes directly from bacteria or is derived from animal products.

Peace,

D

>There is only one nutrient that is available in meat (and other animal

products) but not available in plants and that is Vitamin B12. Humans in the

past used to get it from the tiny bits of soil on our veggies or in our water

from the bacteria that produces B12.

>

>Now Vegans can get Vitamin B12 (from bacteria sources not animal sources) from

supplements or from fortified foods such as soymilk or breakfast cereals. But

read the label as not all brands are fortified.

>

>Humans need Vitamin B12 their entire lives, not just until age 5, so I'm not

sure what this Dr. meant.

>

>Permanent nerve damage can occur if you do not get enough B12 -but your body is

also good at storing it and recycling it -so you can go a little while without

it- but it's safer to make sure you get a regular supply of it with supplements

or fortified foods.

>

>The elderly sometimes have trouble absorbing it and may make less Intrinsic

factor in their gut, (which is needed to absorb it), so that's why sometimes you

hear of elderly folks needing to get a B12 shot. Although some research has

shown that it can be absorbed sublingually, that is, holding a B12 supplement

under your tongue and letting it dissolve.

I get a good vitamin B12 boost every morning by eating a slice of

whole grain toast with Marmite (nutritional yeast extract). It takes

some getting used to, but once you *do* get used to it, you're addicted.

Toast the bread, add some olive oil spread (or butter, if you're

lacto), and then spread a thin layer of Marmite on top. Have a glass

of orange juice with it. The opposites are lovely--warm salty toast,

and cold sweet juice... yum!

Marmite is packed with B12 as well as folic acid. It's an excellent

vegetarian/vegan food that's been used in Europe and Australia for

ages (although in Australia it's called vegemite).
