Guest guest
Dear Sirs/Madams, We are animal advocates from Greece. We have heard in the past few days that the revival of horrendously barbaric rituals by Ainu in Hokkaido in September 2007 is in sight. We cannot in any way consider such practices as traditions, as they cause unjustified and unecessary, unspeakable pain to other living creatures. After all, modern people prove their respect to their traditions by maintaining their meaning and not the practices. Can be really regarded as " traditional ceremony " killing an innocent bear cab? Can such a brutal action be regarded in a civilized, modern country as " harmless " educationally and ethically, a " spectacle " that children should watch? Some say it is the core of Ainu culture, but finally it seems like a mere excuse for entertaining killing. In modern days, no Ainu makes living by bear hunting, and it is hard to imagine that the modern Ainu people in general would be pleased to see the revival of such ancient rituals, which are half a century old and additionally cause horrendous tortures against a defenseless animal. Most likely it is planned by some commercial people in tourism industry. Such a reality proves also the fact of bear hunting in Japan. The claim that bears are hazardous to human safety sounds at most false as hunting is all controlled by Hunting Associations in local areas. They apply for hunting permits " in order to eliminate human hazard " and after killing the bears they take their livers out. Selling one liver makes really good money for them. As animal advocates but also as people who appreciate Japan's longtime tradition, we strongly urge the government to ban " Cave hunting " and all hunting in Japan immediately, despite the pressure by the hunting associations. Also the presense of Bear care specialists in every local authority is vital, as it will undoubtfully contribute to the protection of the animals and of the locals too. Sincerely yours, Maria and Katerina Nika, Greece
