Guest guest
I have received this email from the Antifur group and am passing it along. The group has animal rights contacts within China so information is coming from the front line. The department concerned with the dog massacre does not have email!!!! but can receive faxes. If you cannot fax then send a protest email to the address listed below and it will be faxed for you. NEW DOG CULL IN CHINA MAY START THIS FRIDAY, MARCH 16 The Chinese province of Chongqing has announced a new dog cull because three people died of rabies this past year. Here's the information I received from our contact in China: " The Wanzhou government, which is under Chongqing City, has a fax number (011) (86) (23) 5823-8583. I have just spoken to them and learnt that: for the dogs with owners, they'll let the owner kill their own dogs! for the homeless dogs, they'll kill them by electric shock! The final decision will be made before Mar.16 - that's the day they start killing!!!! Send as many faxes as possible. " If you don't have access to a fax number, please send your letter of protest to one of our members who will gladly fax it for you. Just send your letter to Lesley at ssdalrescue ; She is prepared to fax thousands of letters of protest to China. So, just write a polite note protesting the massacre and also tell them (if you wish) that you are boycotting Chinese goods and the Olympics 2008 in Beijing! Lesley tells me that they may be receiving many faxes and are upset about it--They now answer the fax or you may get a recording in broken English. So the pressure is working! IMPORTANT: Please never mention or even suggest that someone in there supplied the fax# to us. Remember, the Chinese government is ruthless to their own who dare to defy them, and it is not difficult to find animal advocates in China--there Dear Sir/Dear Madam, I wholly oppose the Wanzhou district's plan to slaughter all companion dogs in an anti-rabies sweep of the southwestern city of Chongqing. I understand residents must relinquish their dogs for extermination by March 15, 2007. Police will use electric shock to kill every companion dog in the area. I implore officials to cancel the cull, scheduled to begin after March 16. Please initiate a widespread vaccination program in place of violence. I urge local, provincial and national authorities to acknowledge vaccination drives as the most efficient means to assure public health. Gratuitous killing is profoundly cruel -- to both animals and citizens who love them. Beijing's similar clampdown on strays and unregistered pets generated such negative publicity, officials called it off. Individuals and organizations worldwide were outraged by accounts of officers beating puppies until dead. The media has condemned mass culls as a crude form of " disease prevention, " especially when rabies can be managed through inoculation and cooperation between human, animal and municipal health agencies. Reactive mass culls have proven incapable of curbing stray populations or inhibiting disease outbreaks. I ask the Wanzhou government to respect its own citizens, as well as those around the world, who regard companion dogs as family members. Certainly authorities in a modern city can devise non-violent ways to handle public safety concerns. Please foster a culture of responsible guardianship, rabies prevention, and humane animal control. If the brutal extermination of dogs begins on March 16, 2007, it will irreversibly shame China and the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. In fact, mass culls in the Yunnan province (July 25-30, 2006) and Beijing (November 2006) have already prompted a worldwide boycott of Chinese tourism and products. Please call off the slaughter of all companion animals and restore China's integrity. I respectfully await your reply, " Compassion is the desire that moves the individual self to widen the scope of its self-concern to embrace the whole of the universal self. " Arnold J.
