Over 200 dogs have been culled in the city already, sparking off protests by animal lovers all across the country on the way the authorities are handling the stray dog menace. Dogs are being rounded up mercilessly in the city Bangalore, and many saw this as a knee-jerk reaction to the news that two children were attacked and killed by a pack of dogs in a Bangalore suburb. So far, 229 dogs have been killed and questions are being raised. Thousands of kilometres away from Bangalore, in Delhi, animal lovers are protesting Bangalore's killing spree. Says Ambika Shukla, an animal rights activist, " When a car runs over someone do we kill all drivers? When a school lunch turns poisonous do we shut down all schools? So why this treatment to innocent animals? Is it just because they are helpless? " Rajiv Jain, President of NGO People for Animals (Delhi), agrees, " There is a Prevention of Cruelty to animals Act. It is a central act that applies to all states. Sec 11 says that it is illegal to kill animals. " It's not just animal rights activists that are up in arms over the culling drive. In Bangalore, as dogs were rounded by the municipal corporation, pet owners are distraught too. The Bangalore City Corporation has been under immense pressure to show immediate results regarding the city's stray dog problem. But the operation has come under a lot of criticism from the High Court of Karnataka, the Governor and a number of ordinary citizens, who feel it was carried out in an inhumane and unscientific manner.
