Guest guest
Co-existence Sterlisation is the only way to achieve peaceful and beautiful co-existence between stray dogs and humans. Erika Abrams, Udaipur http://www.deccanherald.com/deccanherald/mar112007/dhforum.asp To cull or not? The authorities have launched operations to catch stray dogs after two children were bitten to death by stray dogs in Bangalore. Should all strays be eliminated? Most Deccan Herald readers are against it as they feel only those dogs ferocious in nature need to be culled. Humans are partly responsible for provoking attacks by stray dogs, they feel. But some readers opine that human life is much more valuable than that of the strays and they must be eliminated. Here's a solution acceptable to all Is there a solution that will please both factions the ones supporting elimination of stray dogs and the ones opposing it? Although it seems impossible here's a solution. Firstly trained professionals must catch all the stray dogs and the dangerous and ferocious ones should be painlessly put to death. No sane human being will object to this. The remaining harmless dogs should be left to the care of NGOs and animal lovers. Bangalore will be then rid of stray dogs and people can walk the streets fearlessly for a change. P John J Kennedy Good & bad dogs No one can tell a good dog from a bad one and whether it is sterilised or not. Since it is not possible to sterilise all the 70,000 dogs in the city, their number is bound to double or even triple in the coming years unless immediately eliminated. Michael Britto Stray-free streets Streets are not the right place for dogs. They need a home, proper care and attention. The dogs on the street have none of these. Animal welfare organisations should take in as many dogs as they can, and then put every remaining so-called stray dogs to sleep using scientific and humane techniques. Gayatri Rao Inhuman To vilify an entire species and culling them is unfair, inhuman and unlawful. It is akin to saying all domestic servants should be killed just because some of them murdered their employers! Instead of targeting these animals the authorities should correct their own lapses and find a way to creatively harness the natural abilities of dogs with proper training. Thus, we can live in harmony with mans best friend. Lalita S Iyer Allocate funds The culling of stray dogs should be stopped immediately. The government must allocate enough funds to NGOs so that they can carry out the ABC programme effectively. They should allocate land away from the city so that a huge dog pound can be started. Culling these animals is the solution. Poonam Daru Foster home It would be unfair to demand that the municipality must care for stray dogs when there are not enough foster homes for orphans. In view of the recent events, the safety of our children is more important and valuable than stray dogs lives. Kumkum Nadig Why hue & cry? Instead of making a big hue and cry over the issue, we should be more proactive and pledge ourselves to keep our surroundings clean so that such misfortunes does not occur again. Manu P Cherian Offer home & love The solution to stray dog menace this is not their elimination. Dogs must be treated with compassion. These stray dogs should be provided with home, food, love and affection. Organised vaccinations and tubectomy-operations for female dogs could also help. Arundhathi Krishnan Value human life We have carved out a society where there is no value for human life. Instead of showing sympathy for the dead infant more love and consideration is being shown towards stray dogs. Even the governor seems so sympathetic towards stray dogs. Children are the future of this country but should we sacrifice the future of this country to save stray dogs? Culling them is the right move . Kamini Zimboova Senseless decision The decision to kill all stray dogs is as absurd, weird and senseless as killing the entire human population because a few amongst us are murderers. Bikram Right to live It is unfair to kill stray dogs just because they roam around on the streets. They have all the right to live just like domestic dogs. The ferocious dogs should be trained and then let back on the streets. Harini Wrong act Humans have created the problem but should the punishment goes to dogs? Everyday there are murders but do we care for that? Does the government capture all the murderers in a van and eliminate them? Srushti Jaidev NGOs must answer When a pack of dogs suddenly attacks, even adults are at a loss as to how to escape. If culling is not the way, it is up to the NGOs to suggest an acceptable solution. U M Mahesh Cull mad ones It is dangerous to have stray dogs around but who is responsible for their flourishing? Most people do not believe in keeping our environment clean. Culling mad dogs is acceptable but not all dogs are mad. Prema Ganapathy Adopt them Sarve jana sukino bhavanthu, this is our culture and how far we practise it depends on how we treat our fellow beings. Eliminating dogs is not the solution to this problem. Instead, adoption of street dogs should be encouraged. Dogs can be your best friends. Treat them with some respect and spare them. Sathya Prema Co-existence Sterlisation is the only way to achieve peaceful and beautiful co-existence between stray dogs and humans. Erika Abrams, Udaipur Civic responsibility Only ferocious, mad and diseased dogs should be killed or caught. Certain civic responsibility is lacking in the people also. They should be more careful by not throwing left over food items in open streets on which the stray dogs survive.
