We see all sorts of abuse and horrifying acts perpetrated on innocent animals in every society...much of which is a reflection of poverty, ignorance, indifference, even misguided " expediency " . But in a relatively technologically advanced country like China or Spain, or in other parts of Asia, it goes way beyond that! It is incomprehensible to civilized people; beyond the pale; beyond what could ever pass for acceptable " tradition " or even necessity. There is an indifference, at best, and always the motivation of profit and greed, at its core. But at its worst, perhaps, is an almost sadistic delight in the conquest and in the suffering. How else could one explain the glee of the visitors in the nightmarish animal park, in this video (see link below)? or the inflicting of extraordinary suffering, endured by an animal that is skinned alive? or the caging of beautiful moon bears for the torturous extraction of their bile? or the consuming of dogs, cats, rabbits, other household pets who live among us? or the intentional poisoning of the animal food chain, thus killing and affecting the lives of thousands and thousands of innocent animals? And don't forget the dolphin slaughters in Japan! the sadistic killing of whales, our own slaughterhouses. And in the case of the Spanish/Latin " traditions " , there are the bullfights and the " fiestas " which involve the torturous burning, drowning, darting, stabbing of bulls...the removal of their body parts while still conscious; and all the other animals who are " sacrificed " in meaningless religious rituals, and for what??? How perverse, how primitive is this? How anthropologically backward, how mired in ancient mores and rituals are these so-called " modern " societies, and the " cave " dwellers that live among us, who have yet to comprehend or experience pity or compassion? who have yet to emerge from the Dark Ages of barbarism and brutality and experience the Age of Enlightenment and Reason! zelda Catsunn catsunn Tuesday, May 22, 2007 4:20 PM Need another reason to hate China? http://news.sky.com/skynews/video/videoplayer/0,,31200-1266788,.html --\ --------------------------- EU shark finning ban ineffective, campaigners say 17 May 2007 16:10:05 GMT Source: Reuters By Jeremy Lovell LONDON, May 17 (Reuters) - The European Union's shark finning regulations are hopelessly inadequate, allowing vast numbers of sharks to be killed, finned and dumped at sea in secret, a report by a conservation group said on Thursday. The Shark Alliance, a coalition of 30 non-government organisations dedicated to protecting sharks, said the lax EU regulations were wiping out shark populations and had to be completely overhauled as soon as possible. The bloc brought in a ban on simple finning -- cutting the high value fins off the shark and dumping the low value carcass at sea -- in 2003. But its fin to carcass weight ratio monitoring system that is supposed to match the fins to the number of carcasses on board is double that used by other nations and allows shark fishermen to continue dumping large numbers of finned carcasses at sea. " The shark finning ban is one of the only measures the EU has to safeguard its declining shark populations, and yet this key regulation is deeply flawed, " said Shark Alliance director Uta Bellion. The report, following a meeting of experts last year, concluded that the EU had to ban finning at sea and insist that all sharks be landed intact instead. The IUCN -- the World Conservation Union - concluded last year that 20 percent of the world's 547 shark and ray species were faced with extinction due to over-fishing. China is the world's biggest consumer of shark fins where they command top prices to be made into shark fin soup. The EU is the largest supplier of shark fins to China, with Spain the leading exporter. " Shark fisheries have boomed in recent decades as international demand has risen for shark products, " added Sarah Fowler, Co-Chair for the IUCN Shark Specialist Group and one of the lead authors of the report. " Shark fins, exported to Asia for shark fin soup, are now among the most expensive seafood products in the world, fetching up to 500 euros ($676) per kilogram. The effects of this demand on shark populations have been ignored for much too long. A seven-member delegation from China visited Delhi this week to seek support from its neighbour for a proposal that wildlife experts say would lead to the tiger being wiped out in the wild. But Indian officials yesterday ruled out supporting China's bid to lift the 14-year global ban on the trade at a meeting next month of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. Indian support for a resumption of tiger-parts trade is important given it is home to an estimated 3500 tigers, believed to represent about half of the world's wild tiger population. China claims to have raised more than 5000 tigers in captivity and says that in addition to being used in traditional medicine, they could be used to replenish declining tiger populations in the wild. China is free to sell tiger parts domestically -- and according to conservationists, it does so, despite signing up to the CITES ban on global trade imposed in 1993. It wants international approval of its trade, arguing that by permitting a controlled trade in the parts of tigers bred on farms, the heat will be taken off tigers in the wild that are killed by poachers. Conservationists refute those claims, saying that lifting the CITES ban on trade would ensure an open season on all wild tigers and further devastate their already decreasing numbers. http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,20867,21757189-30417,00.html ~~~PLEASE NEUTER-SPAY ALL PETS!~~~ Please note: To from these alerts at any time just click on zpenzel and type in in the subject line.
