The numbers were released as part of the national tiger census done by the Wildlife Institute of India and the national tiger conservation bodies. They say the figures have fallen by about half, blamed largely on poaching and loss of habitat. The bulk of the fall has been in the four states of central India. In Madhya Pradesh, Maharasthra, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan the numbers are at most 500 tigers. In Madhya Pradesh alone there are about 330 tigers as compared to 710 in the earlier 2003 census. But there is a rider as the two counts have been done differently. The earlier one was entirely on the basis of counting pug marks. The current one uses other methods as well like camera-traps, habitat surveys, dung droppings in addition to counting pug marks. Some analysts believe the earlier count might have been flawed and inflated.
