Dog killings in Kovalam

I set up ARK , Animal Rescue Kerala in order to implement the ABC/AR program ,

and have been sterilising street dogs for 4 years. Ark has sterilised all the

dogs in the Kovalam area and have a 'Memorandum of Understanding' with the

Panchayats of Vizinjam and Venganoor , in effect covering the whole of the

Kovalam area. In September 2006 the Mayor of Trivandrum asked if ARK would teach

his staff to implement the ABC/AR program.

20 staff from the Corporation were at ARK for three days learning how to catch

, pre-med and handle stray dogs. They then used this information to kill the

majority of the stray dog population in Trivandrum , including dogs previously

sterilised by ARK , and also people's pet dogs. The Trivandrum Corporation staff

have been caught on camera killing and burying dogs by the roadside.I am

currently taking court proceedings against the Trivandrum Corporation in order

to stop the killings.

Tonight (10/02/2007) I was with a group of friends leaving a hotel where we

had been for a night out on Samudra beach (which is covered by our memorandum of

understanding) when we saw the Corpoartion dog-catcher's vehicle full of dogs

outside the Samudra beach hotel.We were told that the hotel had called them to

catch their stray dogs. All the dogs in this area are dogs that are previously

sterilised and vaccinated by ARK.There were 11 dogs in the vehicle , two with

collars , one a dachshund very sick with distemper. There was spade in one of

the cages.

We attempted to stop the vehicle , however the police arrived and told us that

we had to let the vehicle go.They would not talk to my Advocate on the phone ,

nor would they let me go home and return with the memorandum of understanding.

I asked the policeman in charge for his name ,but he hid his badge and then

took it off so that I could not see it. By this time the vehicle with the dogs

had been driven off , the dogs going to a certain death.

The senior veterinary surgeon of the Corporation one Dr.Ravikumar said that

he would continue catching and killing stray dogs and claimed that he would

never care for the provisions in the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act

1960 or the A.B.C.Rules. He claimed that it was part of his style of A.B.C.

 

I request you to petition the Veterinary Council of India to revoke his

vet.degree.
