Guest guest
Dear Eti, Thanks for sharing this information with all of us! I was enquiring about the elphant from another source of mine in Jaipur and I learnt that the circus manager himself claims that the elephant has never been paraded because of its 'non-cooperative' behaviour for many years now. My friend was also able to get me 1st hand information from one of the drunk members that the elephant has been subjected to severe beatings for many years and it seemed like he and the others prided this 'brave' act of theirs. Also Eti, it was not just throwing stones...I was told that the ignorant boy aimed at the elephant's eye because of which Bahadur tore the place down IN PAIN. Unfortunately this only means more ropes and chains around his already bruised leg and more beatings and torture! But folks, there is some thing to look forward to. I have attached an excerpt from a mail I just recieved! This might be of interest if confirmed to be 'true'.... * Salmaan Khan to the rescue of Bahadur from Rajkamal circus: According to media reports, Salmaan who has always been blamed for his not-so-friendly relations with animals, has decided to do his bit for Bahadur (the elephant that went on a rampage at Rajkamal circus a day ago)....ahem...well in some way. Having no celebrities visit the Rajkamal circus (or atleast Jaipur), no organization was ready to spend their time and efforts in rescuing the elephant who has been ailing for over 5 years or in the least, stage a protest. Now with the celebrity who is Jaipur currently for his next shoot...oops... before your eyes pop out...i meant for his film shoot, has decided to visit Rajkamal circus........the media is not only all set to catch a few glimpses of the star, but also expects various high profile organizations who are most likely to seize this opportunity to in the least stage some protests to be present at the venue. * I am so glad that the presence of a celebrity at any venue/ place has so many positive effects, the only times making me wish I were a celebrity too. If i were, then I could go to every venue where animals are being misused/ abused/ ill treated and I would have had many 'bodies' following my footsteps, indirectly helping the animals. Like for example when Shah Rukh Khan was at the Cartier elephant polo venue, there were wide spread protests at the venue and elsewhere by many leading animal rights orgs in the country but on the other hand the following polo match (at Rajasthan festival) where no celebrities were available, the same orgs (or others) were found 'missing'. I recently remember seeing a supposed 'celebrity' behind a cage campaigning against circuses on behalf of some org (pardon my ignorance of names). I think those orgs were not informed about the plight about Bahadur and the others like him. Assuming that members from those orgs and others are d to AAPN, now since they have been informed about the incident, we will see Bahadur living in 'happier' conditions in the weeks to come! Can someone in Jaipur please update the group regarding the state of the elephant? Thanks, Pablo. Guest guest
Dear Pablo, I feel AAPN posts are d by Peta-India. Not sure if officially they do so but yes Mr. Jayasimha N.G, an employee of PETA-India is a regular r of AAPN. I do remember reading posts from him the past on AAPN. Well, they certainly must be working on this now that the message has reached them. Sometimes we cannot blame organizations for not acting in time because most of them are always busy involved in some issue involving animals or the other, also in Jaipur for some weird reasons animal rights violations simply refuse to die, its the same violations and offenses which are repeated time and again. Courtesy: Poor Networking and Sharing of Information between Organizations and Individuals. Atleast in the form of AAPN we have something going on which enables us to reach out to each other share, discuss and debate many issues. Indeed, Salman Khan`s actions have always spoken better than words. Yes, he had done a couple of mistakes in life in the past, but it is wonderful to hear of this person coming out in defense of the destitute elephant. If insiders are believed Salman Khan is going to give all the so called celebrities involved worldwide in animal rights advocacy a tough competition. This guy needs no platform to blow the 'Trumpet of Goodness'. He is a firm believer in what he does, and has now come out a more mature and strong Man. I only hope the same media which followed every movement of Salman post his alleged poaching cases etc...also contributes generously in highlighting some good as well. Whatever be, Salman is not hungry for any credit though. Well celebrities or no celebrities, every issue can be dealt firmly. I am not surprised, but saddened by the fact that when it comes to Jaipur, we always fall helpless. It is time we discussed and analyzed where exactly we lack !!! Guest guest
Dear Azam, Eti and all elephant lovers, I am now fully convinced of the power of email correspondance on AAPN. Barely 2 days after questioning the integrity of various animal right groups, PETA India seem to have woken up to the situation, bounced back and hit reasonably well at the elephant exploiters with a fairly innovative street demo in front of Rajkamal circus at Jaipur wherein Bahadur is currently housed. http://www.ndtv.com/convergence/ndtv/videos.aspx?id=13199 & slug=Ban+on+jumbos+dem\ anded For people who lost track of this case - On the 23rd of April, a case of a circus elephant (Bahadur) going bersek in the circus premises was reported after which the question of what would it take for an NGO, AWO or any other org involved in this field to come forward to help an animal, in this case a schedule 1 animal, an elephant in distress, had popped up. The BIG question was would people act only if personal gains were foreseen (for individuals and orgs themselves)? Would it take a celebrity for an org to react? I think it would be very unfair if any of you still thought that the activists went because of the news of Salmaan being there.....Well agreed that apart from the demo and press releases, they were unable to free the elephant or move it to a rehab centre....but PETA atleast made their presence felt, they were able to bring the issue to light to a greater section of the Indian and international society! Talking to a few people from Jaipur media, I was told that these activists spent the time and money to come all the way from Bombay to Jaipur. Azam and others, are there no organizations in Jaipur who could have and SHOULD have been helping not just Bahadur, but all the other elephants there? I am very saddened by such indifferent attitude towards these creatures! Did it take PETA (and only them) to send people all the way from Bombay to Jaipur? I definitly think that PETA India (I dont know who the activists are) sure deserves a round of applause for hearing *our* pleas here on AAPN and atleast make an effort to convey the message across that (as their title goes)...we need a BAN ON JUMBOS (in all forms of captivity - be it circus, elephant polo, tourist safaris, etc). Also folks, I think this should be seen as a positive sign of team work! if you come across any issues of animals in distress, we know now, that atleast henceforth Peta India will respond ASAP....be it celeb or celeb free (they dont really care)..so we all know whom to contact incase our friends are in trouble. Lets all work together to bring in a total ban on ELEPHANTS IN CAPTIVITY!!! Regards, Pablo On 4/24/07, AZAM SIDDIQUI <azam24x7 wrote: > Dear Pablo, > > I feel AAPN posts are d by Peta-India. Guest guest
We have to now concentrate on elephants. Wildlife officials turn their face on other side when any complaint reg. cruelty is made. Even Central Zoo authority and Kerala Govt has made certain Rules for animals in Circuses/captivity but enforcement agencies are very sluggish. Manoj oswal is facing problem due to an elephant in a resort at Pune. I am having problem in case of elephant in Apollo circus. I have inspected Rajkamal Circus in 2004 at Moga in Punjab and got its registration Suspended, which was later revoked. It had eight elephants then, Nilesh had informed that it was having Six a year ago. How many elephants they are having now and why the number is less can also be investigated. THE AWBI may be informed and asked to take action . Many other friends may also be facing tough situation. Central Govt has Formed PROJECT ELEPHANT( gajendra) under ministry of Environment & Forests. We can also write to them apart from CZA. Peta and other organisations must ask the Central Govt. Wildlife preservation Deptt. to take cognisance of Cruelty upon wildlife as well as exotics. Dr.Sandeep K.Jain Former Member AWBI & state Coordinator,PFA Punjab. Wildlife officials turn their face on other side when any complaint reg. cruelty is made. Even Central Zoo authority and Kerala Govt has made certain Rules for animals in Circuses/captivity but enforcement agencies are very sluggish.> Dear Dr. Jain, If you can recall perhaps Government of Assam has been the only state Government in the country so far to set up a model as far as ' checking captive elephant abuse ' is concerned without the pain of seeking a court intervention. Let me defend the above made statement with some facts: 1. Year: 2002, Place: Guwahati city, Offence: Cruelty & Banned animals in Circus http://www.ndtv.com/morenews/showmorestory.asp?id=32102 & frmsrch=1 & txtsrch=circus\ %2Canimals%2Cassam It took less than 24 hrs to get the forest authorities to rescue and seize all the wild animals including 'elephant' from this circus, which was camping right in the middle of the city. The same Deputy Commissioner who had initially allowed permission for the circus to perform, paid a visit in the venue along with forest officials of the state, took cognizance of the violations under PCA as well as WLPA and the animals were rushed to the Assam State Zoo. 2. Year: 2004, Place: Guwahati city, Offence: Captive Elephant Transportation It took the Government a little more than 24hrs to order a probe into allegations of cruelty involved in the transportation process of captive elephants from Assam to Bihar in a Railway Parcel wagon. Probe ordered into jumbo cruelty: http://www.telegraphindia.com/1041127/asp/guwahati/story_4054796.asp 3. Year: 2002, Place: All Assam, Offense: Force usage of Domesticated Forest Elephants This one took some time to get the Forest department of Assam to finally call of the departmental captive elephants ( employees according to the department ), which were engaged in the herculean task of bringing down illegal establishments in forest land. Some buildings were of concrete with corrugated iron sheet roofings. It took the mighty animal rights people of this country as well as many distinguished elephant experts across the globe to voice their opinion to get it done. A controversial eviction drive: http://www.hinduonnet.com/fline/fl1915/19150460.htm 4. Year: 2005, Place: Kaziranga, Assam, Offence: Elephant Circus like events planned. Biggest event in the history of Assam`s wildlife, celebrities from all over the world, special invitees like the Prime Minister and other dignitaries planned for the 'Elephant Festival' at Kaziranga Centenary Celebrations along with a few events of disgrace: elephant football, elephant mock fight, elephant tug-of-war, elephant race etc. But all these were finally scrapped of from the itenary after the Government was made to understand that such events are outlawed as well as do not have any educational or of consevation value. Torture slur on Kaziranga b?day circus http://www.telegraphindia.com/1050205/asp/northeast/story_4338877.asp Well, I have hard copies of the above success stories and many more such incidents involving not only elepahnts but other animals in distress as well here in Assam. Please feel free to ask me for them, as the web editions of most of the news reports are unavailable. Now, Assam is not as holy a state that you feel I am trying to project. But yes, this state has at times respected the 'elephants' and other animals whever their rights had been violated. It was not MAGIC that worked here in Assam but it was collective efforts and selfless contributions of organisations and individuals from every nook and corner and a positive role of the press and media that helped us reach the goal. But let me warn you that all the succesful efforts which have been painfully initiated by the animal people to achieve some amount of success in Assam can simply go to waste. This I have been always highlighting since the Wretched Celebrity Centered Nonsensical Wierd event called 'Elephant Polo' managed to get glamourised itself in India by superseeding all the so called hurdles which exist in this country to check animal right abuse violations. 1. It got a clearance from the Animal welfare Board of India (AWBI). 2. Protests and condemnation of this event by atleast 24 ( twenty four ) reputed animal rights organisations worldwide was laughed out by people from our own community. Now such examples send out a very very negative signal, a signal that could cause a huge damage to even those offences and cruelties which do not exist anymore in society. Not to forget that it was the AWBI which was very much instrumental to pressurize the State Government of Assam when the at Kaziranga. Only last week the small town of Boko, 35 kms from Guwahati was witness to 'elephant mock fight' organsied by the loacls. Well, how long do you expect a state to be fooled. If Elephants can be abused in Rajasthan, Kerela, Tamil Nadu ..... u name it, just why would`nt the same get practiced back here in Assam again ? We have our own issues, agendas, priorities, ideologies to run an animal welfare organisation. We cannot dictate each other as to who should be doing what. But we certainly can BEG to seek each others assistance, because the elephants are in deep trouble. And I take this opportunity to Beg for an alliance. Let us work together for this atleast. We need to change our mindset. Fighting together for a cause, alliance with other animal welfare organisations may not get you the sole credit but yes, it can surely halt the wrongs. That is the Magic of Networking ! Without networking, we do still may achieve success but that shall be at a very heavy price, and we cannot allow out Gentle Giants to be absued by buying more time. Prioritise one issue at a time collectively. Yes, let us take on 'Captive Elephant Abuse', they are 'Wild' animals and they got no business to be in the entertainment sector. I admit we are not qualified enough to understand what elephants perhaps would like to say on this issue, neither are we so underqualified that we cannot read their actions of protest. The Gentle Giants have in the recent past delivered many fantastic examples of protest not only in India but across Asia. Just what are we waiting for ?? Guest guest
> I am now fully convinced of the power of email correspondance on AAPN. Well, yes AAPN is certainly one of the best things to have happened to India. At least I can say that because as an India I have not come across any platform here in India or on the internet which has such a wide membership who take time out in posting, debating and discussing relevant issues. In the past AAPN has been responsible for helping us spearhead many animal abuse issues which were dealt with firmly. You can see for yourself- The AAPN effect, with regards to the circus elephant- Bahadur. I have always maintained that collective networking is the best way of getting a crisis addressed in today`s world. There are hundreds of issues, we simply cannot fight then individually, but as a team we can end them one by one. ONE AT A TIME ! PETA-India headed by its Chief functionary Ms. Anuradha Sawhney and People for Animals headed by firebrand animal rights activist, Smt. Maneka Gandhi are India`s largest animal rights organizations, and both of them have shown brilliant examples of team effort in the past. Most of my activities that have seen little success in Assam and the Northeast India is because of their efforts. I am sure something can be worked out teaming by up with them as both the organizations have been very good in engaging eminent lawyers and fighting it out in the court and winning animal rights cases when nothing works. Yes, local organizations certainly have to play a very vital role. I would not be able to comment on their role so far this circus is concerned as I have not heard anything from them. If they still need assistance, I am sure PETA-India and PFA would love to hear from them.
