The Perak Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) enforcement division officers are now looking for the culprit or people who gunned down the 18-month-old calf's mother. Mat Chepor's mother died from gunshot wounds at a palm oil estate in Lenggong here on May 8. It had three gunshot wounds – two from large bullets and one from a shotgun – in the head. " Our men are doing all they can to find out who killed her. They have their contacts and their informers in the villages, " said state Perhilitan director Shabrina Mohd Shariff, who urged the public to come forward if they have the information. " We suspect that villagers may have shot the elephant, but we don't know where they are from, or whether they are even from Perak in the first place. " This is definitely not the work of hunters; they only kill male elephants for their tusks. " This is a serious offence as elephants are a protected species. " She said when the mother elephant succumbed to her wounds at Kampung Pulau Cheri some 90km from here, a police report was lodged at the Lenggong police station before the pachyderm was buried. She added that those found guilty of such an offence can be charged under Section 58 of the Protection of Wildlife Act 1972 which carries a three-year jail sentence or RM3,000 fine or both, if convicted.
