Guest guest
http://tvnz.co.nz/view/page/411749/995221 Greenpeace ready to help whalers Feb 19, 2007 Greenpeace fears the stricken Japanese whaling ship the Nisshin Maru will be stuck in ice if it doesn't get out of the Antarctic soon. The government is pleading with Japan to let Greenpeace vessel Esperanza take the ship under tow. Greenpeace spokeswoman Karli Thomas is on board the Esperanza and says there are several ice particles moving closer. She says this is not the time to be playing political games, it is a time to think about safety. Thomas says they have been assisting the Japanese ship by using their helicopter to check the conditions, and are just waiting on the word to tow them to safety. There are a couple of dense ice floes which will make it hard for the ship to manoeuvre in, if they come in close. Thomas says they are standing by, hoping their base in Japan will put the politics to one side, and agree to let them help.
