Guest guest
Dear Sir or Madam, I came from Beijing, China, and I'm living in UK. My name is Si Zhang. I¡¯m writing to you and to every animal protection organizations in the World. I'm hopeless and everybody who loves their dogs is hopeless in Beijing. We are desperately trying to find a way that can save our dogs' lives. China is a country where public Medias are tightly controlled by the government so that what I'm going to tell you is something you hardly know. Since the 7th of November this year, Beijing government started a new regulation on pet dogs. In the regulation, the most ridiculous clause is that residents in Beijing area should not have a dog as a pet when it is taller than 35cm. Other clauses include that you must not go out with your dog during 8am to 7pm and you can not use the lift when you are with you dog, which are also absurd. Personally, I'm totally against the 35cm rule. First of all, the authorities could not even explain where this 35cm threshold came from. As you may know, it is obviously not the universal standard that we use to classify dogs according to their height. Secondly, I can't understand why it matters if people want to have a big dog. Some unofficial explanation to this is that big dogs are aggressive! It doesn't make sense at all. If big dogs bite then small dogs bite too. It is not the dogs' fault, it is the owner's responsibility to train and educate their dog. Dogs know little about what should do and what should not do if their owners don't tell them. Why the dogs are the ones that are punished? Most importantly, I'm writing not just to complain about the rules. I'm trying to let the world know that thousands of dogs are dying in China! They are losing their lives. Here is what happens everyday: Police come to the houses that are reported to have big dogs. They knock at their doors and come in directly to the dogs. They don¡¯t talk too much and they soon take away your dogs. Once the dogs resist, the police will kill them just in front of their owners. No matter how hard their owners are begging on their knees, the police will still finish his 'job'. Even if the dogs didn't get killed in front of their owners, lots of them will still be killed somewhere else because they are 'illegal' and also because they have nowhere else to go due to lack of animal shelters. As a matter of fact, there were many dogs that have already been killed. They got extremely terrified in the small ¡°camp¡± where innumerous ¡°illegal¡± dogs were kept all together so that they fought with each other and barked all day. When this happened, they were just thrown into fire and burnt to die. Maybe it is too hard for you to believe because it is too cruel. But I swear I'm telling the truth which is happening in the capital city of China. I'm ashamed of living in a country controlled by cold-blooded and ignorant bureaucrats. Actually I have a Golden retriever at home in Beijing. I had to ask my parents to send him away to far away country side place because I don't want him gets killed just because he is big. He doesn't even bark, he has registered with local authority and he always stays in my garden. But he is still 'illegal' again because he is big. I'm writing to you because I know that there are thousands of people are going to be separated with their dogs forever. Not everybody is as lucky as I am to be able to send their dogs to somewhere safe. What they can do is just prey for their dogs wishing that there is nobody will knock on their door next morning. Once the police find them, they will have to see their dogs being killed. They will have to see their dogs being beaten and bleeding and dying. Can you imagine how terrible it is going to be if it happens to you? I have attached some photos taken days ago recording the protest of Beijing dog owners. The protest was dismissed by the police almost immediately that day. It is so unfair! What those people want is just asking the government to stop killing dogs. That's all. They are asking no more. I think if there has to be a regulation on dogs then it should be humane and reasonable so that everybody would love to follow. At least, the regulation should not be built on the cost of lives. Please if you can do anything to help us, please do. Please save those dogs. Being big isn't their fault. They don't have to die. Please write to Chinese government and ask them to stop all of these. Please write to other animal protections to let them know about these. Please work together with us to save those poor dogs. Please do whatever you can to help them. Thank you.
