I have been informed that the Tourism Department of Rajasthan is organising this event in an attempt to attract foreign tourists. I am afraid that the promotion of elephant polo is more likely to decrease than increase foreign visitor numbers. Elephant polo is degrading and raises welfare and conservation concerns. The elephants are reportedly trained to 'play' polo using bullhooks, sharp steel hooks that are used to prod them into obeying instructions to perform unnatural behaviours. In addition, this 'sport' damages important work being done by Asian wildlife organisations that are trying to promote respect for their wildlife. I am sorry to inform you that Advocates for Animals will be urging our extensive worldwide membership not to visit Rajasthan until the promotion of elephant polo is ended. I await your response with interest.
