The Human-elephant conflict in the state resulted in three more deaths

of wild elephants. This time it was in Behali tea Estate, in the

Sonitpur district of Assam about 250kms from Guwahati city.

On saturday last, 11th November` 2006 unattended 11Kva high tension

electric cable was lying inside the tea estate premises which is

normally frequented by the elephant herds.

A herd believed to be in the strength of 30-35 elephants was crossing

the tea estate and came in contact with the live electric wire,

leaving an adult female and two male calves aged one year and five

years dead. It is feared that some more elephants of the herd could

have been injured due to electrocution.

The possibilty of a human trap to kill the elephants cannot be ruled

out.

I have personally come across examples of people who have been doing

so. Laying out live electric fences with hig voltage etectricity to

keep elephants away is a rising trend among the encroachers in the

Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam. Recently a man was arrested

by the wildlife authorities after he was found guilty of laying out

such a wire which took the life of an adult 25 year old elephant.
