SOME NOTABLE FIELD CALLS # On a call from PETA India, PAWS rescued an injured PIG from Dahisar which had maggot wounds in its eyes. Nilesh, Prasad & Kishor of PAWS hospitalized the pig at the Thane SPCA animal hospital and could save one of its eyes from further damage. # PAWS volunteers Nilesh & Kunal also rescued a cobra that had entered a ground at Gandhi Nagar area. With the help of Wildlife Department , the snake was released into the wild habitat. # When Kishor who works with PAWS spotted an injured and bleeding buffalo on the Diva-Vasai railway track, our ‘Best volunteer’ Prasad with Nilesh rushed to the spot. With the help of local people, the buffalo was taken away but it was too huge to fit into our Matador Ambulance. We gave spot first aid to stop external and internal bleeding. Unfortunately, despite all the efforts, the buffalo died early the next morning as its spinal cord was broken as a result of injury from the railway engine. On same railway track we found a dog hit by a train. We rescued the injured dog immediately sent him to Thane SPCA animal hospital where he breathed his last. Hats off to Prasad & Kishor for their innumerable efforts in saving both these animals. We really proud of them! Our Ambulances rescues more then 3 distressed animals on an average per day. This includes dogs, cats, birds and small reptiles. The cost of the Fuel goes more then Rs.20,000/- per month. VEGAN RECEIPE: Spanish Gratin Potatoes Looking for a smart snack? Almonds contain calcium and magnesium for strong bones and monounsaturated fat for a healthy heart. High in protein, these tasty little treats also provide vitamin E, potassium, and iron. Almonds are extremely versatile -- you can eat them plain or use them in recipes to replace dairy and enhance flavors, as displayed in this Spanish Gratin Potato recipe. Almond milk is a terrific dairy-alternative as well! Ingredients: 2 lbs. potatoes, boiled* salt and pepper (to taste) 2 pinches saffron 3 Tbs. olive oil 2 cloves garlic 1 tsp. paprika 1 slice bread, torn into pieces 1/2 cup almonds, chopped (preferably blanched) 2 cups boiling vegetable stock or water 1 Tbs. parsley, chopped * don't peel for higher fiber and minerals Directions: Preheat oven to 375 F while cutting the potatoes in quarters or slices. Oil baking dish; arrange potatoes in a single layer; season with salt, pepper, and saffron. In the frying pan, heat oil over medium heat, add bread, almonds, and garlic, and sauté until golden; process in food processor with paprika and a bit of the stock until smooth. Sprinkle mixture over potatoes and then pour remaining stock on top. Cover and bake for 45 minutes, gently stir and continue baking, uncovered and bake for 20-30 minutes, until liquid is gone and potatoes are cooked. Place under broiler for a moment until brown, sprinkle with parsley, and serve.
