*KUANTAN: A hunter is believed to have accidentally shot and killed his

hunting buddy; then, distraught, shot himself to death.

*

Construction machinery driver Wong Shan Man, 46, had gone hunting late on

Sunday afternoon with mechanic Tan Taw Wing, 55, in an oil palm estate at

Felda Bukit Sagu, about 40km from here.

The two were close friends and had been hunting buddies for a few years,

according to their friends. They lived in the same neighbourhood in Indera

Mahkota here.

About 10.30pm, Wong called his wife on his mobile phone, telling her he had

accidentally shot Tan.

He asked her to meet him at a petrol station near Bukit Sagu, as he needed

help to take Tan to hospital. Then the call was cut off, possibly due to

poor network coverage in the area.

Wong's wife called his friends for help, and they headed out to the spot

where the pair usually hunted.

" We found Wong's car by the roadside on the fringe of the oil palm estate

about midnight, " said a friend of Wong's at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital

mortuary here where the bodies were taken.

Wong was found about 30m from the car, slumped in a sitting position under

an oil palm tree with a shotgun in his lap.

" His face was so badly damaged by the shot that we had initially failed to

recognise him, " said the friend.

A second shotgun was found inside the car. The two men had carried a shotgun

each.

Wong's friends alerted the police at 3am. Police found Tan's body six hours

later in a ravine about half a mile from where Wong was found.

Tan had a gunshot wound in his abdomen.

Members of the two men's families at the mortuary were distraught and

refused to be interviewed.

State Criminal Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Narena

Sigaran said the case was still being investigated.
