Guest guest
Read below. I am sure by going through this news report we surely can make the connections between the massive poachings, illegal wildlife trades in this region at the international level and the insurgents/terrorists/extremists whatever you name it. What clearly is missing in the news report below is the mention of " poachings " and " wildlife crimes " . Well unfortunately both " poaching and wildlife crime " is still considered to be a forest subject petty enough to be treated as a serious issue when " innocent " human lives and their vulnerability is being described. Even journalists sometimes fail to make that 'connection' for reasons best known to them. It is this attitude of the masses which is one of the reason for wildlife issues getting a lower priority in India and elsewhere. We have fast track courts for rape and murder cases here but nothing for wildlife crimes. Conviction rate for wildlife crimes in India is believed to be less than 10%. Local people here alleged that extremists outfit, aided by international groups, have setup bases in the border areas from where they have extended their illegal trade in drugs, arms and ammunition. Such anti-social activities have made life miserable for the people here. It has also been alleged by circles that militant outfits, especially the NSCN and the KNV which have been calling the shots for a long time now, have intensified their activities like extortion, kidnappings and killings under the very nose of the government agencies concerned. Regular demands for huge sums of money, especially from the tea gardens, have caused sleepless nights among the common people. The drug market set up clandestinely is allegedly used by the local banned outfit to extend their illegal trade from the North East region especially parts of Manipur and Nagaland to other parts of India. Moreh town in Manipur, bordering Myanmar, is normally used as the transit point for drugs and other banned goods. The local people who have had enough of the militant outfits have urged the government of Assam to initiate steps to prevent the situation from going out of control.
