The Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), an animal welfare society, has taken a decision to set-up cattle ponds where stray cattle including cows, buffaloes and oxen can be kept. Officials of SPCA said they have identified areas such as Jugsalai, Dhatkidih, Sakchi and Baridih for setting-up cattle ponds in an area of two acres. Staff members deployed at the ponds would take care of the cattle. SPCA inspector, A.K. Dubey told The Telegraph that the society would rope in Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) for setting up the cattle ponds. " We will initiate Catch Stray Cattle operations at regular intervals. The cattle caught during the operation would be sent to the cattle ponds, " he said. According to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960, there is a provision of fine for detention of animals at the cattle ponds. The SPCA has fixed Rs 80 per day for detention of each cattle. This means the owner of the cattle would have to pay the mandatory fine to take back cattle from the cattle pond. The cattle would be released with a warning to its owner. The benefit of such an initiative would be that it would help in improving traffic conditions and reducing road accidents. Due to the presence of stray cattle on roads, several accidents took place in the city in the past. The operations would be undertaken at night, to prevent inconvenience and accidents for commuters. The society has also recently written to the state animal husbandry department for granting funds for the construction of cattle ponds.
