Dear friend,

Recently, one member group of Chinese Companion Animal Protection Network

(CCAPN, http://www.ccapn.ngo.cn) CatsZone (http://catszone.org/), a regional

cats' protection organization got heavily involved into a well publicized

local community confliction caused by stray cats over population problem in

Hangzhou, China. Couple of month ago, there have been some stray cats over

population problem in a residential community with the name of " WuLing

Garden Apartments " . those people don't like strayed cats in this community

complained to media in the name of all resident in WuLing Garden that, those

strayed cats in the area cause flea and other sanitary problem in this area,

and claim they want to kill all those cats to get ride of them. There have

been cases those people who don't like cats maltreated those over populated

cats.

After being informed of this story, CatsZone voluntary staff went to the

residential area and start to communicate this problem with residents,

CatsZone staff brought the idea that people should treat animal with respect

and tell residents desex program can be used to solve this over population

problem and cruelty towards animals should not be tolerant. Many media,

such as TV media program, 'News 60 Mins', 'Entering today', and some

newspapers, have interviewed CatsZone and reported this story. It becomes a

hot topic in this area.

Last week, the story goes into larger scale. With the help of CatsZone, 73

residents composed a joint letter plea the rights of live for those tray

cats. The letter is handed into local authority 2006-11-16. The letter say

'stray cats problem can not be handled by commit cruelty towards those cats

and killing them, desex program should be used instead'. And 'people's

attitudes towards those cats reflect the relationship between human animals

and the nature, and determine the development of civilization in the city'.

The whole letter emphasised one idea that 'human should co-exist with

animals in harmony'. This article is published on 'Hangzhou daily' at the

same day, it is a popular newspaper speaks a lot on behalf of local

authority, not surprisingly, more reported and public discussion and debates

follows this 73-joint-letter.
