A four-year-old boy was killed by dogs earlier this month and in January a pack of dogs savaged to death an eight-year-old girl while she was playing, L.T. Gayatri, chief health officer of the city municipal corporation, said. " The operation to catch and cull ferocious and sick stray dogs is going on, " Gayatri said. " It's a one month intensive operation and we hope to check this menace very soon. " Gayatri said in the past two days, 468 dogs have been caught and some of them have been killed. Bangalore is home to more than 1,500 top global and Indian IT firms. Most city residents welcomed the drive. " I am all for it, " said software executive M. Ramya. " You face this stray dog menace everywhere in Bangalore. In the morning, when I leave for office, I have been chased by dogs. It's really very, very scary. " Animal rights activists said authorities in Bangalore, which is facing a serious infrastructure crunch, should focus on cleaning up the city and on mass sterilisation of stray dogs instead of killing them. " What is happening on the ground is indiscriminate slaughter of dogs, " activist Suparna Ganguly said. " We are against this. " Stray dogs are a regular sight on the streets of many Indian cities and in rural areas, often seen chasing pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles.
