Editor,

Sir:

Re: " A sporting encounter, " 20 Nov.

The organisers support of an elephant polo game is both disingenuous

and self-serving. Hurting elephants in an event to raise money to

" help " other elephants is contradictory. There is no doubt that

elephants used in these kinds of polo matches suffer.

PETA investigators found elephants used in this very same game living

in abysmal conditions. Some had open wounds, presumably caused by

being hit with an ankus (a rod with a sharp metal hook on the end).

Elephants were observed being beaten violently with sticks, and others

were kept outside in full sun with little shelter or water.

To support this event under the guise of helping animals is shameful,

and corporates should realise what harm they are doing to the animals

by funding such sports.

We would be grateful if this letter could be printed in support of the

animals.
