Guest guest
Original Message Source: <Animal_net> Herma Calen herma.caelen South Africa Should Consider Elephant Cull - WWF (with 'allies' like that animals don't really need enemies) http://www.planetark.com/dailynewsstory.cfm/newsid/40499/story.htm -- As this unfortunate news breaks in with headers such as above signalling that there are strong chances that India could be the next target for aisan elephant cullings if we are to believe the likes of WWF and many experts, who have been time and again trying to stress on the commercial culling of elephants in India and allegedly lobbying with some state forest departments. Commercial culling in India which was suggested by a noted veteran elephant expert Dr. Dhirti Kanta Lahiri Choudhury couple of months back was discussed and debated on AAPN and also a polular news magazine in India, 'The India Today' (Bengali). In the last Asia for Animals Conference the question, whether he agrees to the views of Dr.Dhirtikanta was put across to Mr. Vivek Menon of Wildlife Trust of India by and the answer from him was a NO! Eminent elephant expert from India Mr. Kishor Chaudhuri is also against any culling of wild elephants in India, Mr. Kishor is presently involved in many such projects of human-elephant conflicts on the ground and feels that it is unnecessary in India to to go for culling. There are many other experts who have also voiced their opinions informally against commercial culling of elephants. One area that has not been explored though is that whether WWF-India is 'for' or 'aganist' this considering that it gets a nod in South Africa. With this news pouring in now about South Africa, the Asian Elephants here deserve some serious attention, at least now !
