Guest guest
Unbelievable but true ! Liquor Baron Dr. Vijay Mallya`s Kingfigher Airlines joins the band wagon of 'Cheap Animal Entertainment Business' by dedicating glossy colour pages of its in flight entertainment magazine called " HI BLITZ " to glorify an Elephant Polo event. The January 2007 edition of " HI BLITZ " highlights the recently concluded " Tag Hueur " Elephant Polo tournament which was held at the Jaipur Polo Grounds in New Delhi, India`s capital. Shahrukh Khan is shown saluting the crowd on a horse drawn carraige ( Although the superstar and brand ambassador of " Tag Hueur " later on a national television channel expressed his displeasure which he goes through every time he is made to ride on animals ). Shahrukh Khan who was there to inaugurate the event of course stayed away from playing polo riding on an elephant. The Kingfisher Airlines magazine has exclusive pictures of other celebrities such as former Indian cricketer, Kapil Dev, other business tycoons and a majority of popular faces from the Indian film industry, Bollywood. " Tag Hueur " is also quoted, as saying that hereafter it shall host more such elephant polo events in India. Elephant Polo could easily have been a thing of past. But friends, sadly though at the recently concluded Asia for Animals 2007, we saw how our efforts failed to draft a specific resolution to seek a BAN on 'Elephant POLO " . There is just no 'WILL' within the circles to get this event banned. One brilliant example being that the AWBI chief went to the extent of enjoying the game of 'Cartier Elephant Polo Cup' in Jaipur last year. Such gestures are dangerous and damaging and will definitely invite mushrooming of more events involving animals in entertainment, and of different kinds too. After all it's Millions of Dollars and Pounds that is pumped into various levels to keep such things alive and going. This is show business, and not a tradition, which a section of animal welfare people put it as. I am afraid taking 'Elephant Polo' to 35,000 feet above sea level is yet another slap from the 'STUPID ANIMAL ENTERTAINMENT BUSINESS' to the entire community of animal people in India. Are we ready for more? Azam Siddiqui
Guest guest
I suggest everyone takes a look at signature number 208 on Azam's petition site at : http://www.thepetitionsite.com/signatures/857409235?page=5 It roundly exposes Cartier's 'philanthropy'. I personally know since I have researched the issue written about since 2004. In fact, Cartier still does not come clean on its business policy, elephants and otherwise. Would not be surprised if the same issue stands valid for Tag Heuer too. What is tragic is that there appears to be a conscious effort to deliberately ignore the predatory policies of these multinationals to justify their involvement in so called charitable activities towards animal welfare. One look at Cartier's history of elephant abuse and their motive becomes clear but people find it difficult to leave their comfort zone. Money, celebrity and royalty combined can ensure that one can get away with anything. Otherwise, why would activists be arrested for a peaceful protest concerning elephant polo?
