Puppies abandoned for two days - The Malay Mail -8 May 2007

By KHAIRUN NIZAM AB GHANI

THE sight of two puppies, chained to the gate of a neighbouring house

and left without food and water, proved too much for Faizrullah Abdul

Rahman.

The 20-year-old resident of Taman Bukit Anggerik, Cheras, did what any

caring citizen would do — seek help.

" It was on Saturday and the puppies had been chained and left without

food, water and shelter by its owner for two days.

" I was at my wit's end. I had no choice but to contact the Fire and

Rescue Department at 12.45pm, " said the clerk yesterday.

Faizrullah said when the team from Taman Segar station arrived, one of

the puppies had died due to strangulation.

" One of the puppies was struggling furiously causing the metal chain

to suffocate her, " he said.

During the incident, the owner of the puppies was not in.

He said the firemen had to cut the metal chain to free the puppies and

surrendered the animals to a team from Society for the Prevention of

Cruelty to Animals, which arrived soon after.

Another caring neighbour, Chan Ah Kam, said what the owner of puppies

did was cruel.

" The puppies were left without food and water. They barked non-stop

out of hunger and thirst, " said the 59-year-old housewife.

Chan said on several occasions, she gave the puppies some food and

water, and placed an umbrella to cover them from the blistering heat.

" I am upset over what had happened. One of the puppies could have

survived if the owner did not chain them, " she said.

The owner of the puppies, said to have moved into the house last

month, was not in when we visited the house yesterday.

An SPCA spokesman said on Saturday that they left a notice at the

gate, stating the offence committed by the owner.

" In the notice, we also asked him to contact us within three days,

failing which we will forward the case to the Veterinary Services

Department for action, " she said. —
