Guest guest Posted May 8, 2007 Report Share Posted May 8, 2007 Hello Friends, I am drafting a list of suggestions to be sent to concerned authorities regarding present problems, future improvements needed in conservation of Gir and protection of Asiatic Lions. Why not have your inputs to this list? Please send your suggestions, current problems at Gir, conservation methods or whatsoever that you may feel would help better conservation practice and management of Gir Wildlife Sanctuary. As a quick aid to refresh your memory I have given hereunder few points: - Problems due to religious places inside WLS - Problems due to unregulated constructions inside and on periphery of Gir - Industries problem and control - Mining & quarries problems and control - Problems of plastics and other pollutants - Problems due to road network inside and on periphery of Gir - Maldharis inside the WLS - Use of technology like CCTV camera and other modern technologies. - Problem of Open wells - Creating new home/s for lions - Stronger management, monitoring and control systems with help of management gurus. - Human pressure - Man animal conflict. - Involvement of community and NGOs in Conservation; - Programmes to educate people and students surrounding Gir. - Inadequate & Unequipped field Staff; Fixing responsibilities of staff - Forest land encroachment - Better Animal health management - Protection of lion satellite areas (i.e. areas outside Gir) - Acquisition of corridor lands - Railway line - Illegal Grazing - Increase in unwanted vegetation like lantana - Poaching problems and measures - Wood cutting - Degradation of peripheral forest - Genetic bottle-neck - Night safaris - Exploitation by political leaders of surrounding areas (vote bank!) - Appointment of global experts to suggest conservation - More frequent Census using latest techniques. Please add, edit, elaborate, censor or whatever and let me hear from you as soon as possible. Regards and thanks in advance.
