BOS Nyaru Menteng on NBC Today Show, Monday

Recently, presenter Ann Curry and the Today show team visited the Nyaru Menteng

Orangutan Project to find out what is being done to save the orangutan from

extinction in the face of the growing demand for palm oil. The feature will be

broadcast in North America on Monday, 14th May. (Check your local listing for

times). Podcasts are also available from the NBC Today website.

From our Friends at Rettet den Regenwald:

Dear friends,

We have one week left to tell the UK government to protect rainforests from

biofuel expansion. The Department for Transport are consulting on the Renewable

Transport Fuel Obligation, which sets high targets for biofuels, without

offering any safeguards for rainforests, other biodiverse ecosystems, food

security and local communities. The only thing the government proposes is a

'reporting requirement' - companies have to report themselves whether their

product causes harm, but they don't have to actually avoid deforestation diesel,

nor will there be any independent checks. Right now, concessions for biofuel

plantations are being granted for millions of hectares of land, much of it

forested, in South-east Asia and Latin America - in expectation of the new

demand from the UK and elsewhere. Only a moratorium on the obligation and

targets can stop the destruction and save rainforests. Please go to

and take part in our letter-writing campaign before 17th May, if you have not

already done so, and please ask your friends and family if they might like to

take part, too. Many thanks.
