The Department for Transport are consulting on the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation, which sets high targets for biofuels, without offering any safeguards for rainforests, other biodiverse ecosystems, food security and local communities. The only thing the government proposes is a 'reporting requirement' - companies have to report themselves whether their product causes harm, but they don't have to actually avoid deforestation diesel, nor will there be any independent checks. Right now, concessions for biofuel plantations are being granted for millions of hectares of land, much of it forested, in South-east Asia and Latin America - in expectation of the new demand from the UK and elsewhere. Only a moratorium on the obligation and targets can stop the destruction and save rainforests. Please go to http://www.regenwald.org/international/englisch/protestaktion.php?id=163 and take part in our letter-writing campaign before 17th May, if you have not already done so, and please ask your friends and family if they might like to take part, too. Many thanks. .............................................................
